He Paid for Our First Date Like a Gentleman — Then Sent Me an Invoice for Affection

After being single for a while, I went into a new date with cautious optimism. My best friend Mia had set me up with Eric, a man she claimed was sweet, thoughtful, and a true gentleman. With Mia’s boyfriend Chris also vouching for him, I figured it was worth a shot. Eric looked charming in the photo, so I agreed to meet him for dinner.

Eric made a stunning first impression. He arrived with a bouquet of roses and a personalized keychain, held doors open, paid for dinner, and was attentive and funny. We bonded over crime podcasts and documentaries, and he ended the evening with a warm hug. I left thinking maybe I’d finally found someone genuine.

But the next morning shattered that illusion. Eric sent me a PDF file — a “date night invoice”. It listed everything he did the night before and assigned each act a “required payment”: a hug for the flowers, a selfie for pulling out my chair, a second date as repayment for dinner. At the bottom, it read: “Payment is due in full. No refunds.”

I forwarded the bizarre invoice to Mia, who immediately shared it with Chris. Outraged, he created a hilarious “invoice” in return, mocking Eric’s expectations and suggesting he owed all women an apology. We sent it to Eric, who responded angrily, claiming we were immature and that I missed out on a great guy. I blocked him.

Mia apologized, but I assured her it wasn’t her fault. If anything, the experience gave us a memorable story and a good laugh. Dating can be unpredictable, especially later in life.

From this, I learned to watch for red flags, never feel guilty about setting boundaries, and always appreciate the power of humor — and loyal friends — when dating goes sideways.
