A 8-Year-Old Girl Calls 911 and Says, ‘It Was My Dad and His Friend… Please

As Officer José López parked his patrol car in front of the small, weather-worn house on Maple Street, he felt a knot form in his stomach. The details Vanessa had relayed to him were troubling, and he knew the situation required not just his training but his empathy. He approached the door, noting the faint sound of cartoons still playing inside, mingling with the unsettling silence that often accompanies distress.

He knocked gently, announcing his presence, “Liliana, it’s Officer López. I’m here to help you.”

There was a pause before the door creaked open, revealing a petite girl with wide, teary eyes. Liliana’s face was pale, her fragile frame swallowed by an oversized t-shirt. Her gaze was a mix of hope and fear as she stepped back to let him in.

“Hi there, Liliana,” Officer López said softly, kneeling to her level. “Can you show me your tummy?”

Liliana nodded, lifting her t-shirt slightly to reveal a distended abdomen. Alarm flashed through Officer López’s mind. He knew they needed medical assistance immediately. “Liliana, I’m going to call an ambulance to make sure your tummy gets the right help, okay?”

She nodded, trusting his words, as he radioed in for medical support. In the meantime, he sat with her, asking gentle questions to piece together the situation.

“Liliana, can you tell me more about what happened when your dad and his friend came over?”

Her small voice was hesitant but honest. “They always bring food. At first, it tasted funny, but they said it was special. After eating, my tummy started hurting. They said it was normal, but…” she trailed off, tears brimming once more in her eyes.

“Hey, it’s okay,” Officer López reassured, patting her back lightly. “You did the right thing by calling for help.”

As they waited, Liliana led him to her mother’s room, where a woman lay asleep, her face flushed and body in a deep, unaware slumber. Officer López quickly assessed the situation — it seemed Liliana’s mother was incapacitated, unable to care for her child or even herself.

The ambulance arrived in moments, paramedics rushing in to assist. They carefully examined Liliana, expressing concern over her condition, and began examining her mother as well. Both were soon transported to the nearest hospital for further evaluation.

Later that evening, Vanessa received a call from Officer López updating her. The truth behind Liliana’s plight emerged in stark detail: Liliana and her mother had been victims of a deceitful scheme by her father and his associate. They had been using the pair to test experimental drugs, unbeknownst to them, resulting in Liliana’s severe abdominal distress and her mother’s frequent bouts of illness.

This revelation left everyone involved heartbroken. Vanessa, sitting back at the emergency center, felt tears welling up, thinking of the bravery of the little girl who had reached out for help despite her fear.

A few days passed, and Vanessa couldn’t shake the haunting call from her mind. But she found solace in the fact that Liliana and her mother were now safe, healing both physically and emotionally. The community rallied around them, offering support and ensuring they never faced such darkness again.

In the end, Liliana’s courage not only saved her and her mother but also highlighted the profound impact of an attentive and compassionate emergency response team. It was a stark reminder of the vulnerability of innocence and the power of a child’s voice to spark change and seek justice.
