When First Impressions Aren’t What They Seem

I met a guy on a dating app, and to my surprise, we clicked almost instantly. Our conversations flowed easily, we shared the same sense of humor, and he seemed genuinely kind. After weeks of messaging, we finally decided to meet in person. I remember feeling that mix of excitement and nerves, wondering if the real-life version of him would match what I had come to like so much through a screen.

When I saw him, he looked exactly like his photos—well put together, friendly, and easy to talk to. But within minutes, something caught me off guard. His scent was incredibly strong. I couldn’t tell if it was cologne or something else, but it was overwhelming enough to distract me. I tried to ignore it and stay present, because everything else about the date was going well. Still, it lingered in the background, making it hard to fully relax.

As the evening went on, I found myself torn between enjoying his company and being distracted by something so small yet so noticeable. We laughed, shared stories, and had a genuinely good time, which made it even more frustrating that this one detail kept pulling my attention away. By the end of the night, I decided I didn’t want to leave with uncertainty or silently judge him for something he might not even realize.

So I asked him gently about it, trying not to make him feel uncomfortable. When he laughed and admitted he probably overdid it because he was worried about not smelling fresh, everything shifted for me. Suddenly, what I had seen as a flaw became something completely different. It wasn’t carelessness—it was effort. He had simply tried too hard to make a good impression, not realizing it had the opposite effect.

We ended the night on a positive note, and even though I wasn’t sure where things would go from there, I walked away with a different perspective. Sometimes what feels like a dealbreaker is just someone’s nervousness showing in an imperfect way. And that moment stayed with me, reminding me that a little understanding can completely change how we see someone. READ MORE STORIES BELOW
