The Call That Changed Everything

That night, Ethan sat alone in his penthouse staring at a photo he had secretly taken at the mall. Two boys with gray eyes smiled up at their mother, completely unaware that their lives had just collided with his. He barely slept. By sunrise, he had asked his lawyer to locate Lena—not to fight her, but to understand what he had thrown away.

Twenty-four hours later, his lawyer uncovered something Ethan never expected. Five years earlier, shortly after Lena disappeared, his mother had transferred two million dollars into a private trust linked to a shell company. The same week, Lena had received a legal notice threatening her with years of court battles if she ever contacted the Mercer family again.

Ethan drove straight to his mother’s estate outside the city. When he confronted her, she didn’t deny it. She calmly admitted she had paid people to make sure Lena stayed away because a pregnancy scandal would have damaged the company’s upcoming merger. “I protected everything you built,” she said coldly.

For the first time in his life, Ethan realized he hadn’t just lost five years because of his own fear—someone else had made sure he never had the chance to change his mind. But as he looked at the documents spread across his mother’s desk, he understood one painful truth: no amount of betrayal would erase the choice he made in that boardroom. And if he wanted to know his sons, he would have to earn the forgiveness he had never deserved.
