The Gate Stayed Closed

The mansion they had come to claim was empty. Every room echoed. Every hallway stood bare. Even the closets contained nothing except empty hangers.

Grant stared through the gate as if he could somehow change reality by looking harder. “You emptied the house?” he asked, disbelief clear in his voice.
